THE GIG LIST – NUMBER 14

This edition of The Gig List showcases a couple of great nights out for you at venues neatly placed on our beloved Brighton seafront. Both are part of a couple of tours, one from Radio One DJ, Annie Mac, and the other from Vice Magazine. November’s lined up to be a an expensive month if you like your new music and you live in Brighton. Why else do you work so damn hard though right!?

FAKE BLOOD
This DJ is about as surrounded in mystery as the devil himself. Very little is known about him. His name and photo are nowhere to be found, so speculation is rife. I better be careful what I write here, and apologies if I get things wrong, but it’s not the easiest task getting details on this. If you believe NME, then you’ll be forgiven for thinking this guy is one half of Soulwax. Other sources say he’s one half of The Black Ghosts, a band of which he’s done an awesome remix (my favourite tune by him to date), as well as remixes for Crookers and his well known popular club tune packed full of rave flavour – Mars. He’s linked all the time with Boy 8-Bit, Herve and that whole warped, bass-heavy, fidget-house dance scene. ”The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn’t exist“. Well he does exist and he’s DJ’ing at Digital, so go see for yourself….

LITTLE BOOTS

OK I gotta keep this relatively short and sweet because Little Boots is lined up for a Q&A on here soon with a little luck and she’s also getting her own Recommender posting too, so I don’t want the blog turning into too much of a Little Boots love-fest. However, she is totally adorable and a refreshingly brilliant musician. She’s blowing up in the media just about everywhere currently with her awesome synth-pop. As the former frontwoman for the band Dead Disco she should be used to live performances, yet she’s as fresh-faced and wide-eyed as her gathering crowds of teenage worshipers. She’s coming to our town for what will be one of three gigs in the last few months of 2008 in Brighton with the Vice Magazine tour, ‘Vice Kills’, at Coalition on the beach front. She will perform on the same bill as DJ Nightmoves and rapper DELS. All will be well worth your investigative time.

Please note that these are two separate gigs involving Little Boots, so don’t get the two confused. Whether you catch her at the first or second performance you really have no excuse to miss her. See you there. Enjoy…

THE RECOMMENDER – NUMBER 14

Hello once again Recommender-lings. I have three tidy little beauties listed for you today, two of which have more of an 80′s keyboard-slant than is probably healthy, but we persevere. You really never realised just how much impact Duran Duran would have back then did you eh!? Is it a good thing though? Only one way to find out – read on…

HEY CHAMP
This Chicago 3-piece are all echoing-guitar, drifting keyboards and upbeat 80′s-influenced pop. Just resting the correct side of European pop music, with chromed-out lyrics and a nice pounding pace, they’ve churned out a handful of interesting tunes. Thanks for the heads up on these guys goes to the blog’s Discodust and Chicago’s own Hot Biscuits. Hey Champ have just announced signing for Lupe Fiasco’s label, FNF UP, so things are now taking shape for them. It may be a while before the UK gets to see a tour, but in the mean time check out this tune and bliss yourself out…

EUGENE MACHINE
This is a fantastic group from London making glitterball-electro-pop. It’s full of catchy keyboards, danceable build ups and breaks to be savoured. We catch them here at the very early stages of their evolution, so the attached mp3 will sound lacking in production, but the promise is there. You will also enjoy the sexy singer and keyboardist, Emma, leading from the front. She’s joined by the equally classy guitarist Robin with his rhythmic sweeps. It’s all plucked straight out of the 80′s, but has enough melodic power and squelchy bleeps and tweaked brass to be as up to date as anybody. I await there arrival of their live set coming soon to Brighton, so I’m off now to prepare my big hair and glittery jump suit…

CLINKER
This London 3-piece are all about slowed down, smoking-grooves. They play out like a dreamscape and sit very neatly in your ears. Lots of fuzz and echo is tucked in there and they could tone it down a touch, but it never gets too annoying and the songs remain full of enough melodies. They are in desperate need of some high-end production, but that’s fair enough considering they aren’t even signed yet. They come across like the floppy side to any Beck chorus, with humour in the vocals, yet with enough melody to remain a serious promise. Loosen up and check them out.

I’ve already written up the next Recommender and it’s a corker, so head back here real soon for another spread of the love…
