THE BEST MUSIC BLOGS OF 2010

THEBESTMUSICBLOGSOF2010-POST-1.jpg picture by odelaybradford

There are thousands of music blogs now in existence and it’s difficult to know where to turn, or indeed return to. It’s a global marsh of varying opinions, all discussing music, from hundreds of genres, but there’s still many that are truly outstanding, worthy of praise and a repeated visit. Well, we want to shine a light on those excellent blogs.

This isn’t The Bloggies, or any other grand annual award giveaway, we simply want to canvass our network of music bloggers to gauge the real highlights in music blogging that are out there. You may have your focus on creating a passionate blog, but we are certain you also feel in a network of others, so you’re aware of those bloggers that you love and agree with, from those new, small, independent ones, to the well-established, giant, global businesses. It’s time to pick your favourites and get your votes in and show your support.

Closing date is 12th December.

BASIC RULES -

1) We require a minimum and maximum of 3 nominations per comment.

2) This is about peer to peer acknowledgment, so it is only open to those who contribute to other music blogs. Please leave the name and/or link of your music blog in the comments section below your votes.

3) All three nominations must be different, so no voting for a blog more than once.

4) Any votes after 12th December will not be counted.

5) Only one set of nominations per person.

If you have any questions, or issues, then please let us know. This should be a fun, encouraging and positive exercise for all.  A poll for the best in music blogging, by music bloggers, for music bloggers. It doesn’t get more back-scratchingly awesome than this, so VOTE VOTE VOTE…

Thanks.

The three I nominate would probably the three I check on a regular basis which are:

    Listen Before You Buy
    http://listenbeforeyoubuy.net
    Pigeons and Planes
    http://pigeonsandplanes.com
    The Music Ninja
    http://themusicninja.com

I think it’s because all three of them cover a different array of artists. Listen Before You Buy I get my taste of indie (the unknown/known), Pigeons and Planes I get my daily dose of HipHop R&B and The Music Ninja has all the GOOD electronic remixes (because I really hate bad ones). Don’t get me wrong, I follow many other blogs as well but these are the three I go to most and if I had to pick three it would be them.

I’ve bigged up Sweeping The Nation in the Record Of The Day Awards (would be a bit disingenuous to vote for my own blog – FADED GLAMOUR) so here are another three:

    - The Blue Walrus (http://www.thebluewalrus.com): I think me and Tim started our music blogs at pretty much the same time back in 2006 so it’s great to see what TBW has become over the years and its consistently high quality output.

    - Illegal Tender (http://illegaltendermagazine.blogspot.com): Carl and Tom are streets ahead of the game with their new music tips. They know before you know.

    - Music Fans Mic (http://www.musicfansmic.net): Not sure how they find the time but the sheer volume of content is fantastic. Almost inspiring in a way.

There are loads of other great blogs I don’t think anyone’s mentioned yet so I’ll jog some memories – Fucking Dance, A New Band A Day, Another Form Of Relief, The Daily Growl, There Goes The Fear, Not Many Experts, And Everyone’s A DJ and so on and so forth. I hope people seek out some of these blogs if they haven’t heard of them.

    Pigeons and Planes (www.pigeonsandplanes.com)
    Sunset in the Rearview (www.sunsetintherearview.com)
    The Music Ninja (www.themusicninja.com)

Sunset in the Rearview has developed into such a great blog full of personality, creativity and passion without coming across as pretentious. Most importantly, their taste is fucking great.

The Music Ninja is just, as a ninja should be, full of surprises. I go on there one day and find some weird psych-pop and the next day I find a dubstep banger. I like that in a blog – not the same 5 posts as 20 other blogs.

There are so many other great blogs though, really hard to pick two. Shout out to everyone on the P&P blogroll, love you all.

  18. PhilNo Gravatar says:

Cracking idea Mike! I hope you haven’t been excessively moral and excluded the Recommender from voting! If not, then here’s my three choices:

    1. Illegal Tender
    2. The Pigeon Post
    3. The Recommender

If I had any complaints it would simply be that there are so many more I’d love to choose! Breaking More Waves, My Band’s Better Than Your Band, gvsb, Transparent, Neon Gold – all worthy of my votes as well.

    Regards,

    Phil

  19. ChuckNo Gravatar says:

    Daytrotter
    Guttersniped
    Obscure Sound

There are so many people putting a lot of sweat and tears into their sites. It is so easy now that it is tough to find and keep an audience … So here’s to everyone who is still fighting the good fight.

  22. VNo Gravatar says:

    1) Test Pressing (http://testpressing.org/)
The only blog I’ve ever come across that in reading emulates the experience of digging through a record shop before mp3s existed. A truly special home for dance music exploration and education.

    2) Pinglewood (http://www.pinglewood.com)
I appreciate a site carried by its written voice and Pinglewood is tops in tone and taste.

    3) Southern Hospitality (http://www.southernhospitality.co.uk)
A lot of hip-hop sites seem to operate under the “hip-hop for hits” agenda. Southern Hospitality continually introduces me to quality names/tracks all with no apparent interest in the rat race to scream first.

    Top three:
Sunset in the Rearview (I know it’s not kosher to vote for yourself, but I really believe in my blog and the work I put into it…so there goes.)
Pigeons and Planes (Confusion makes it fun to go back and check every day, keeps me guessing, and it’s a consistent blog where I can find great new music first.)
I Am Fuel, You Are Friends (I think I like everything Heather posts. Such a great source for new music.)

  29. sunset in the rearview, pigeons and planes, and pretty much amazing. the only three worth alot of my time.

sunsetintherearview.com — a talented writer who graduated from Duke, she really takes the initiative to discover artists, and gets a lot of exclusives from artists that frequently top hypem, passionate about music and it shows in her blog, creative, always evolving.

bridgingtheverse.com — consistently blogs tracks that are keepers, and finds a lot of unknown/rare gems that you won’t find on other blogs.

survivingthegoldenage.com — one of the older music blogs around and still cranking out tracks at an impressive pace where the quality matches the quantity.

They are all awesome music blogs.

  34. MeatbreakNo Gravatar says:

These three are all really well written, well informed and give me music I haven’t already heard about.

Lurker – http://www.lurkerspath.com/ – Extremely insightful metal blog, with detailed articles and interviews, always about elevated music.

Sonic Router – http://www.sonicrouter.com/ – The only dubstep blog you need to read. interviews, reviews, mixes.

Anti Gravity Bunny – http://antigravitybunny.blogspot.com/ – Love the writing style of this and he’s alwayays unearthing deeply underground weirdness.

This is really interesting because I follow so many and using RSS so it isn’t a choice of which one I visit most frequently. I don’t see the designs of the websites either so that isn’t a factor and I follow a variety (predominantly electronic) of which few have been represented so far. Likewise, I haven’t visited the majority of those already listed.

    1. Slutty Fringe http://www.sluttyfringe.com because they’re unnecessarily but amusingly cynical about everything yet always deliver something I like but probably won’t have heard of.

    2. You Can Call Me Pelski http://ppelectro.blogspot.com it’s not always to my taste but he has an encyclopaedic knowledge of electronic music and it’s exceptionally well written.

    3. Red Threat http://redthreat.wordpress.com/ A blog who’s music taste seems to move at exactly the same pace as mine. I always get good new music from here.

I write for The Recommender and http://weareblahblahblah.com and http://www.brightonpierpressure.blogspot.com

-Awesome Tapes From Africa – the original and best African music blog
-Nialler9 – obsessively updated, and written with a pleasing lack of pretentiousness; the site that inspired me to start a blog.
-Don’t Die Wondering – my favourite: beautifully laid-out, absurdly influential, breathtakingly devoted and depressingly, humblingly cool.

My blog’s Some Of It Was True! (www.someofitwastrue.com), focusing almost entirely on London-based acts.

I hate picking out bloggerin’ peeps over other bloggerin’ peeps, the thought of saying bob is better than jane breaks my hearticles. But, with that being said, Mr. Recommender wants 3 names, here’s what I came up with..

    1. Culturebully.com — Awesome guy, a friends, keeps it reals as reals can keeps it. Much love & high fives.

    2. WeListenForYou.com — stood up for your boy Tsuru, wears their hearts on their sleeve, if only to piss off Pitchfork, and that’s good enough for me.

    3. going local with Katie Pierce at Heavy Percussion – http://katiepierce.tumblr.com – More live shows & interviews than you know could come to Columbus, OH. She’s way cool, super sweet, and generally awesome (and a cute as all hell too).

The runaway favourite blog for me is Freaky Trigger’s “Popular” project, where every single British number one single is reviewed. This is an astonishing piece of work which is astoundingly well written, whether you agree with the views expressed or not. The detail, care to attention, and the community this blog has created is a serious achievement.

    http://freakytrigger.co.uk/popular/

I also always expect Garage Hangover to run out of material soon, but it never does – probably one of the finest and most well-researched blogs out there for making sense of the bottomless pit of the sixties garage scene:

    http://www.garagehangover.com/

For current material, I still lean on Sweeping the Nation a hell of a lot. Updates haven’t come as thick and fast throughout 2010, but it’s still a great source of information.

Ok, I write for Consequence of Sound and 130 BPM, so I’d like to vote for them…Right? That is allowed? They are really good too, I’m not just being lame.

Um, with my last pick, I’ll take a little known site called Pitchfork. It’s not the sexy choice, but they are the standard bearers for a reason. Nowhere does the writing feel more naturally sharp, the reviews are insightful and usually right on and most importantly, they are uncompromising. Making friends to build a website and providing legitimate criticism easily confuse our instincts, but ultimately all anyone wants is better art through artists reaching their potential and all of us to somehow make a living in the process. Pitchfork makes all of us want to be better.

I was gonna vote the site I write for, then it seemed like no one else was doing that so I want to be a gentleman. The guy above me did that though. Decisions.

I write for Consequence of Sound and I’ll be a gentleman.

    Twenty Four Bit
    Needle Drop
    Stereogum

My reasoning is totally arbitrary for all three.

    My three:

    1. Passion of the Weiss (http://www.passionweiss.com/)–best music writing on the net. Even when he’s talking about music i have no interest in, i’m spellbound by Jeff and his crew’s writing.

    2. Berkeley Place (http://www.berkeleyplaceblog.com/)–even though they cover more than just music, his music choices largely and consistently are winners. (full disclosure, i’ve written a few pieces for this site, but not on music)

    3. Rollo & Grady (http://www.rollogrady.com/)–absolutely love his recommendations (full disclosure again, i’ve written a couple of pieces here, too, but not in 2010)

This is way harder than I thought. So many great blogs out there now and they all deliver a different product for a different market. In my opinion the Blog that tries to help the artists before they help themselves is the best. Without the artists the there would be no Blogs.

For that reason http://www.sunsetintherearview.com has to be number one.

http://www.Dirtymexicanlemoande.com- I write on this blog and our mission is definitely to help the artists at all costs.

http://www.ThisSongIsSick.com- always has been one of my favorites.

  159. Sunset in the Rearview. A really great site that blends the best of all genres. Kind of an allstar list, this is my one-hop stop for music. D Prep and Lydia do a great job of writing and finding the best music.

    Pigeonsandplanes.com

Finally I get to cast The Recommender’s votes as editor…

    1) PRETTY MUCH AMAZING – If this was a city then it would say ‘twinned with The Recommender’ on it’s sign. Quality selections, identical tastes to ours and very strong editorial too.

    2) ILLEGAL TENDER – Carl and Tom post about 5-10 times each month, so it’s a case of quality over quantity, but just like our blog they’re trying to “raise awareness for new artists” and have been responsible for breaking many new bands. If you want to locate something that isn’t listed anywhere else, yet, then we suggest you head here.

    3) THE NEEDLE DROP – The self-proclaimed “hardest working music nerd” is a blogger with lots of knowledge, a humble, but sharp wit, a lovely looking site, lots of inventiveness with youtube album reviews, a blog tv channel and he hosts cool radio show on NPR too. If you want a blog with personality, that’s entertaining, intelligent and full of ideas and entertainment then you can’t look too far past this blog.

    Thanks
    Mike
