Sarah McIntosh, the creative force behind one of the hottest buzz bands of 2010, The Good Natured, has an astonishing ability that belies her 19 years on this planet – she’s mastered that difficult balance of creating melodic pop with a powerful, emotive and honest beauty. It’s a rare skill to manage, seeming to be raw, yet rounded, brittle, yet strong, but she’s nailed it. It was previously located inside the likes of Bat For Lashes and Liz Fraser, among a handful of talented others, but it’s even more rare in male artists.
One successful protagonist however is Sufjan Stevens, an enormous talent, who has created music like a one-man factory of magic over the last decade. Unique, delicate, independent and fearless, he defines the term ’artist’, endlessly producing album after album of inventive, charming, left-field songs. An inspiration to us all, but clearly one for Sarah, as she’s selected to cover ‘For The Widows In Paradise, For The Fatherless In Ypsilanti‘, last heard on his 2003 LP, Michigan.
Having covered Sarah on The Recommender blog from her very earliest days, (see here), as well as having her play at one of our gigs back in May, we are pleased to continue the relationship by being passed the mp3 of the cover exclusively. We also list the video and mp3s from her latest single, Be My Animal, which was released on November 1st. It shows her exploring subjects as direct as sexuality and matters of the heart, as Sarah continues to mature song by song.
