BBC 6 MUSIC BLOG AWARDS – NOMINATIONS

BBC 6MUSIC BLOG AWARDS 2012

This month BBC 6 Music has asked a handful of established music websites from the UK to select and host a category for their inaugural BBC 6 Music Blog Awards. The Recommender has been asked, (alongside The Quietus, Drowned in Sound, One For the People, Never Enough Notes, For Folk’s Sake, Some Kind Of Awesome, The 405 and Data Transmission), to select a category and ask it’s followers to vote.

We’re offering up the nominations for our category below and we ask all of our followers, either via Twitter, or by leaving a comment on this post, to cast your vote for the winners. Please use the hashtag #Blog6Music if Tweeting and make sure you @The_Recommender in that Tweet for them to be counted.

Our category is ‘Best Tease Of The Last 12 Months‘. This can really mean anything, but in a world where music blogs are useful tools in viral marketing, we are central to teasing the public about new music. We can often be found as the purveyors of a Youtube teaser trailer, passing the buzz on to millions of people around the world in seconds. We all love a sneaky preview, or an allusive storyline, or the first signs that an excellent album is on it’s way, so we’re celebrating ‘the tease’ in all it’s glory.

Cast your votes now and make sure you tune into the ceremony which is taking place on Friday, on BBC 6 Music, from 7pm, with Tom Robinson as your Master of Ceremonies. Tom will then announce the results.

THE NOMINATIONS

ELLIPHANT – Who are they? Are they boys or girls? Are they really managed by Nikki & The Dove’s management team? Are they even Swedish? We still don’t know for sure quite yet, but what we do know is this video and song teaser is totally fucking rad! Consider us well and truly teased.

IAMAMIWHOAMI – This band’s tease began with a video that was as expensive as it was weird way back in January 2010. Nineteen videos and over two years later we’re still waiting for the debut album, Kin, which we’ve been informed is finally due in June 2012. We’d have lost interest months ago, if it didn’t look and sound so damn good. The latest video, Drops, arrived this week.

JUST A NUMBER 05272011 – What is it with the Scandinavians? Another teaser from that part of the world was set up last Spring, with the band’s name listed simply as ‘Just A Number 05272011‘. That clearly corresponded to a date and the big reveal duly arrived in May with the confirmation that the band were not in fact from The Isle Of Man, as first suggested, but in fact a quartet called Battlekat, from Denmark.

SAVOIR ADORE – If you want straight up teaser videos, then look no further than that of Savoir Adore’s single, Dreamers, which arrived last November, prior to the release of the single on Neon Gold Records. Weird imagery, exciting clips and a burst of the song were all introduced in a dizzying one minute video.

LANA DEL REY – Hardly set up as a teaser, this apparently home-produced video for her song, Video Games, set the world on fire. Over six million views later, it’s been a lesson in building a brand virally, but what is unsure is whether it was the mastermind of her label Interscope or simply what it seemed – an inexpensive home-made video. The mystery surrounding Lana Del Rey’s backstory has been a lesson in hype and backlash ever since. This was a tease for the truth as much as it was for her album.

THE SOUND OF ARROWS – The trailer that teased us last September for the upcoming Sound Of Arrows debut album looked expensive, just a little bit awesome and handed out just enough of their synthetic throb to have onlookers drooling over their keyboards.

BBC6 MUSIC BLOG AWARDS

THE BBC 6MUSIC BLOG AWARDS 2012

You don’t just have to be a reader of The Recommender these days, you can also listen to us discussing music on the radio. Over the last couple of years our editor, Mike, has been welcomed into a range of studios to commentate on new music, including the likes of Juice FM, Hype Machine Radio, BBC South, a number of podcasts and on America’s National Public Radio, but one station that’s had us regularly on air is BBC 6Music.

As we find ourselves in the middle of this year’s awards season the bloggers are also getting their say. This month BBC 6Music has asked a handful of premium music websites from the UK to select and host a category for their inaugural BBC 6Music Blog Awards. Each music site selects a category and because it’s entirely up to us you aren’t going to find any ‘Best Album‘, or ‘Best Single‘ selections, this is aiming a little more left-of-centre and should prove all the more interesting for it.

The ceremony will take place on Friday, on BBC 6Music, from 7pm, with Tom Robinson as your Master of Ceremonies. We’re offering up the nominations and we ask all of our followers, either via Twitter, or by leaving a comment on the relevant post (see our very next post for all the nominees), to cast your vote for the winners. Tom will then announce the results.

You can follow us on Twitter here. Please use the hashtag #Blog6Music and make sure you @The_Recommender in that tweet for them to be counted. Or simply state who you want to win in our category by leaving your vote in our comments on that nominations post.

The music sites involved are:

Best Tease of the Last 12 Months – (The Recommender)
Tomorrow’s Cult Artist Today – (The Quietus)
Must See New Band for Summer 2012 – (Drowned in Sound)
Most Genre Defying Artist – (One For the People)
Unsung Hero – (Never Enough Notes)
The Writes Songs Joni Mitchell Would be Proud Of – (For Folk’s Sake)
The Album of the Year that you Never, Ever, Skipped a Track on. Ever – (SKOA)
Best Free Download Album – (The 405)
‘Superstar DJ’ in the Making – (Data Transmission)

Our category, ‘Best Tease Of The Last 12 Months‘, will open in the next post we upload, so look out for that next. You can then view the nominations and start considering your votes. Good luck and don’t forget to tune into the station and get on Twitter this Friday to hear the results. #Blog6Music. (MB)
