THE BEST MUSIC BLOGS OF 2012

Artwork by Laura Siragher (www.laura-siragher.com)

What is the state of the global music blogging scene in 2012? Are music blogs a more established form of media than they were 12 months ago? Do you read more of them, or have you refined your RSS feed? Are they seen to be growing or diminishing when it comes to their popularity or influence? Difficult questions to answer, but one fantastic way to get the discussion going and to find out which blogs are leading the way is to ask the people at the centre of the music blogging world, other music bloggers.

Regular readers will know that we open up this poll every year and it’s become something of an annual barometer. It’s a well known fact that music bloggers read music blogs. It’s a large chunk of the traffic on our busy blog highways. This peers-only poll – which strictly only canvasses those who run their own music blogs – asks them to nominate which three blogs have become their favourites in 2012 .

It is by far the most-visited article The Recommender writes every year, as the poll goes globally viral, with votes counted in their hundreds from all around the world. The commentary it provides reaches beyond the editors of these music sites though, as with so many millions of blogs out there, it’s helpful to know which ones truly stand out. If you don’t know where to start, or are looking for some new suggestions, then we hope that this poll will act as a guiding light to the best in music blogging in 2012.

We now declare the books OPEN! Let the voting begin…

It couldn’t be easier to get involved – simply leave a comment on this post listing your favourite three music blogs of 2012. There are some rules that apply so please make sure that you read the below framework before you vote! Any votes that don’t follow the rules will not be counted (last year we had 47 incorrect votes that couldn’t be counted, so please don’t make that same mistake). If you edit, write or contribute to a music blog then go for it and get voting!

Closing date is November 30th 2012. We will aggregate the votes as they appear. The winners will be announced early in December. Please follow us on Twitter for updates and announcements. The winner will receive an award that they can place on their music blog and virtually polish with pride.

The results from the 2010 and 2011 votes can be seen here and here respectively. If you have any questions, or issues, then please let us know. Remember, this should be a fun, encouraging and positive exercise for all. A poll for the best in music blogging, by music bloggers, for music bloggers. It doesn’t get more back-scratchingly awesome than this.

Thanks

Top two blogs are easy for me, the two I check the most often and have probably the most duplicated posts with, although Robin does go off with his robot-sex a bit more than me!

    1. Breaking More Waves
    http://breakingmorewaves.blogspot.com/

    2. Flying With Anna
    http://flyingwithanna.wordpress.com/

Third one could go to a few different ones, TVPME, Gold Flake Paint and Faded Glamour are all in my reading list but this year I’m going to go with Sociopaths are Glam, I like it because the author has a similar taste to me (surely the reason to visit a blog) and they actually give reference to discovery, a thing fewer people tend to do in my humble opinion. I’d like a bit more ramblings but you can’t have everything!

  52. Hello. I’m always uncomfortable with the title of ‘Best music blogs of (insert year)’. I like the idea of this poll being ‘bloggers favourites’ rather than best of.

Anyway, I’m embarrassed to admit that except for a few minor excursions to American blogs such as Neon Golds blog and Listen Before You Buy the vast majority of my blog reading / listening is via UK blogs, and so it is for those that I will be voting. (Note to self to check out more of these U.S blogs listed)

My favourite blogs do a number of things.

    1. (The most important thing) They entertain me. Personally I can happily read about music that I don’t personally like if they do this.

    2. (The second most important thing) That the music they post I like at least sometimes.

    3. That they interact – if I leave a comment they respond and make me feel valued as a reader – either in their comments or on twitter.

These blogs achieve all the above criteria and hence are my 3 favourites this year

    1. The Von Pip Musical Express

    2. Sounds Good To Me Too

    3. Faded Glamour

Big shout outs to Flying With Anna, The Recommender, Just Music That I Like, The Blue Walrus,The Electricty Club, Beat Pyramid, Alphabet Bands and Electronic Rumors who all come a close joint 4th !

Aww, The Recommender very nearly got it’s first vote there! It’s nice to hear a little explanation behind the decision making. I agree with your points and I personally find that I look for similar criteria in the blogs I love too, although I found I’ve been getting more from European blogs this year.

  61. Andy Von PipNo Gravatar says:

    Right then, so…
Confession time, we (me) tend to stick to about 8 to 10 blogs whose taste we trust… maybe we should get out into cyberspace and do some virtual meet and greets a bit more often?

When is a blog not a blog? When it has its own PR Company? Record label? Shop? More than say 15 writers? … Will simply calling it “a blog” make it so ? … Indeed, does any of that really matter as long as the content is good?

On Planet Pip, we tend to be drawn to blogs that are well written, show real passion and aren’t particularly concerned with scoring hipster points by being “first.” If you’re genuine it shows – blogs that post without context or merely regurgitate PR verbatim are all well and good but aren’t really our ‘bag’ – we can all cut and paste. A sense of humour, a unique voice and doing things a bit differently are all desirable attributes in our view – therefore we’ll go for
    1. Breaking More Waves
(Funny and thought provoking, which occasionally morphs into Pop Justice meets Benny Hill)
    2. Drunken Werewolf
(Tells it how it is with warmth, intelligence wit, and when required, righteous anger)
    3. Just Music That I Like
(Constantly unearthing musical gems that are possibly closer to our taste than other blogs)
Of course, we could have gone for The Recommender, The Blue Walrus, Not Many Experts, The Metaphorical Boat, Gold Flake Paint … who all do a wonderful job… but we can only have three
And yes, we too really need to check out some American blogs, but there are so many, where does one start?

    • Mike BradfordNo Gravatar says:

Again, I’ll take that as another nearly-vote for The Recommender. This is torture! lol

You know our tastes align, both in terms of music and your choice of blogs.

I’m hoping that this poll gives people a window on blogs they’ve never heard of, so scan it and perhaps a few new (American) sites will jump out?

      Thanks for voting mate.

Thanks to all those that took part. The full post with details on all the winners will be up on this blog very soon.

As with every year I leave my own votes until last, so here’s mine…

    1) A NEW BAND A DAY – Joe set himself up for a fall, having to find a new band EVERY single day. However, he manages to be remarkably consistent, not only finding many exceptional bands on a daily basis, but he writes about artists that nobody else has uncovered. If you really want an original source for emerging music this is a daily reward.

    2) CRACK IN THE ROAD – Josh and co provide one of the UK’s finest blogs. Regular posts, often very early to awesome new music, and consistently on trend, this is a great blog. They weren’t awarded the 2012 Record Of The Day award for ‘Best Blog’ for nothing you know. Truly deserved.

    3) NO FEAR OF POP – Everyone knows Berlin is a hub of counter cool. This European blog is consistently brilliant. Blogs that stick to very underground, very alternative music or so often hit and miss, but somehow this blog is hit after hit.

Thanks. See you all next November!
