THE BLOG SOUND OF 2013

Over the coming weeks, there will be so many talking points in the music world that it just gets silly. Our peers-only poll to scout the Best Music Blog of 2012 came to a close in recent days, so we will be announcing the details and confirming the winner of that shortly. Every blog under the sun will be doing their respective End Of Year lists, including our own Best Tracks and Best Albums list, so that always throws up great pub conversations. The BBC will be delivering the results from their famous Sound Of 2013 poll soon too, something The Recommender gets to be a part of each year, so we look forward to seeing which artist gets a genuine boost. However, today we come to the blog equivalent, cleverly titled The Blog Sound Of 2013. See what we did there?

It’s not to compete with the BBC list, simply to run parallel as a useful comparison. With us having feet in both camps it proves a useful exercise – we voted for three artists on the BBC poll and were asked for five on the blog’s version, yet we selected differing artists. We figure the reason is that if you asked us every day from now until 2013 we would give you a different answer every time, what with so many possible artists to look out for next year – tipping acts for 2013 is kind of what we’ve been doing all year!

Most folks, including those inside the music industry, know that music blogs are now an established layer of the underground music discovery scene, so people genuinely care for whom the blogs are tipping. This week the long list for the blogger’s poll was announced, so we see those results below. Three of our five nominations made the cut, with the below player showing off songs by each of them. The final results, with the ultimate winner, will be announced on January 3rd 2013. How many of them have you heard before and what do you think of the list? Answers on a post card, or if it’s easier, leave a comment with your thoughts. (MB)

I just can’t see the relevance of a Blog Sound OF 2013, a supposed antidote to the BBC list, when this one is about as shit as the Beeb’s. If anyone out there would care to start an Alternative Blog Sounds of 2013 list with me, please get int touch. This list is just full of bland bands that have mostly got on the list because they have money behind them

What!? Why is our list about money? Can’t figure that out. I’ve never been offered money to vote on this list or the BBC poll. Most of these artists are not signed to major labels.

The BBC poll isn’t even out yet, so how do you know it’s bullshit? I don’t like every artist on this list – it’s a poll from a variety of bloggers, which is kind of the point – but to dismiss them all is pretty lame.

Send us a link to your list of 2013 tips then, if you dare?

    • So are you saying that we shouldn’t have voted for someone just because they (allegedly) “have money”? Should I have asked the bands in question their bank account details before I voted for them to make sure they are “proper artistes”?

Money never crossed my mind when I nominated who I did. I nominated them because I happen to enjoy their music, nothing more, nothing less?

Don’t worry Chris, this comment was left by a disgruntled musician and it’s transpired that he copied and pasted this same aggressive comment on lots of those blogs who were involved. Not sure he’s going to get much coverage on music blogs for the foreseeable future with that move. Idiot.

Interesting, so in the end, a 50% agreement with the beeb’s poll, actually surprised AlunaGeorge didn’t make theirs too. Not sure what it means, if anything.

By how much have previous year’s been different?

  3. [...] the list and who shouldn’t. The blogs organised their own similar parallel list last week, (which you can see here), and this year sees lots of unexpected crossover. The Recommender is in the fortunate position of [...]
