For those of you who may have read our interview with Guy Connelly of Clock Opera, we know that he’s just as comfortable making music with a Black & Decker as he is with a piano, which says everything about how creative and bloody marvelous this artist is.
The ink is still wet from their signature with the excellent Moshi Moshi label and we’ve immediately been sent the new single, Belongings, to celebrate. It’s a classic Clock Opera showcase, led by their grown up songsmith, as we experience a song structure that patiently builds up, from a delicate piano start that collects like condensation on a window, up to a rousing, emotional close. As it finishes you receive their best-played trick; as the music stops you realise just how involved you were. They’re subtle moth-to-a-flame lure hypnotizes you into forgetting everything for a second, until it’s done and you’re back in the room. Amazing.
In other news, we are pleased to also hand you Clock Opera’s recently-completed, new video for a previous single, Once And For All, which is another marvelous, semi-religious experience. We observe a video shot in super-slow motion, virtually freezing people as they leap into the air in a moment of joy, freedom and expression.
2011 should be the year in which we see Clock Opera step up. They play music that’s aiming for a different level to most other artists out there, producing intelligent, well-constructed, orchestral pop songs that are always left of centre, but enjoyed from start to finish. Try to catch them live as it’s something that translates brilliantly to the stage. You can see them play a batch of the hottest SXSW showcases through March if you’re lucky enough to be in Austin for the mammoth music festival.
